One of the goals is that "at least 40% of the younger generation should have a tertiary degree".</span></b></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="NO-BOK">Ligia Deca said: 'Setting benchmarks is good. But if the bar is set as low as this, Europe will not be able to call itself a real knowledge economy by 2020.</span><span lang="NO-BOK"> </span><span lang="EN-GB">Having less than 50 per cent higher education graduates among the young generation is a problem rather than an ambition.'</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Although ESU supports the Commission's proposal for an increase in research and development (R&D) investments, the organisation thinks this should be matched with at least an equally raised level of investment in tertiary education.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">ESU does not believe that the current policies and budget allocations in Europe allow for the Commission's ambitions to come true. For example, the Commission has formerly proposed a loans scheme to increase the mobility of students between countries, but has made no move on increasing equity in higher education as a way of breaking the poverty and social exclusion cycles.</span></p> <p class="MsoNormal"><span lang="EN-GB">Deca said: </span><span lang="NO-BOK">"<span>Such schemes for financing based on loans are a way for governments to slowly withdraw from the public financing of higher education. If this trend is continued, the Commission's goal of 40 per cent tertiary education graduates will fail. </span>The EU funds could be better used to support the current EU2020 ambitions, by reshuffling funds towards the education and training sector from areas which are of less long-term sustianability."</span></p></font> </p> Wed, 03 Mar 2010 21:24:15 +0100 Application for Summer Seminar in Cyprus in two rounds, 8-14 and 15 to 21 March http://www.isha-international.org/module-News-display-sid-16.html http://www.isha-international.org/module-News-display-sid-16.html A new application procedure will be used for the seminar in Cyprus, taking place from 7 to 12 June. The application will be done in two rounds. The first one will be as always, one week, from 8 to 14 March. The people who apply in this first round will get their confirmation on the 15th of March. If there are still places available after the first round, a second application period will immediately follow, from 15 to 21 March. They will get their confirmation on the 22nd. This makes it possible for the early birds to be accepted soon and to arrange their travels soon.
